Negative consequences

Presenteeism has negative consequences for affected employees and for companies. For employees, presenteeism can exacerbate an existing health impairment and also have a negative impact on the quality of everyday work and work performance. For companies, presenteeism leads to reduced productivity and quality of work. The increasing costs due to productivity losses are not only caused by absenteeism, but also by present employees who work less productively or perform work of reduced quality due to presenteeism. Various studies indicate that the costs of presenteeism can even exceed those of absenteeism.

The analysis on the correlations from the study also showed that individuals with increased presenteeism reported lower job satisfaction and poorer health for both body and mind.
